A Public 'Steamboat Willie' Video Has Been Demonetized By YouTube
Possibly the most seismic event in terms of media in 2024 is the Steamboat Willie version of Mickey Mouse becoming public domain. While no other versions of Mickey can be used, and his trademark three-circle logo is also off limits, Disney finally lost the copyright to the earliest version of the most popular cartoon character of all time.
Someone should tell Disney, though.
Popular YouTuber Brock Baker uploaded the full version onto his channel with comedic voiceover and sound effects, only to get the dreaded copyright/demonetization hammer from Disney. This was doubtlessly frustrating, and Baker uploaded several screenshots about it on his X account.

Maybe it’s just that YouTube or Disney haven’t updated something or other, but this could also be a rather unsettling trend. Disney is the kind of company that has the power and money to crush creators using Mickey, with the average YouTube channel not having the ability to do much about it. Steamboat Willie’s Mickey is getting a horror movie by the director of the Grinch parody You’re A Mean One, as well as a video game. Ultimately, this may just be a temporary thing as the tide of Steamboat Willie media comes out, and Disney can’t stop all of it.
Either way, that probably doesn’t help Brock Baker right now. We’ll have to see what happens.
