Square Enix president Takashi Kiryu has penned his latest New Year’s Letter. These letters have outlined his vision for the company, and have been going on for several years now, dropping on New Year's Day. This year, Kiryu has announced that Square Enix plans to, “be aggressive in applying AI and other cutting-edge technologies to both our content development and our publishing functions.” Kiryu had previously supported other controversial technologies, such as NFTs, blockchains, and the metaverse. Kiryu is specifically looking towards AI thanks to the rise of generative software like ChatGPT. This has inspired other software, some of which has been used professionally.

Square Enix is looking to use these technologies to “enhance our development productivity and achieve greater sophistication in our marketing efforts,” as Kiryu put it. “In the longer term, we hope to leverage those technologies to create new forms of content for consumers, as we believe that technological innovation represents business opportunities.” In what form this will take, we don’t know, though we do know that he has plans for the publishing and development sides of the business to better cooperate. Until the time comes, we can only speculate as to what Takashi Kiryu has in store for his company.
