Shazam! Fury of the Gods landed in theaters over St. Patrick’s Day weekend with Asher Angel and Zachary Levi sharing the title role. The film rose to the number one spot as quickly as Billy Batson. transforms into the superhero Shazam. The film raked in $30.5 million in its opening weekend beating Scream 5 and Creed III for the top spot. Around the globe, the Shazam sequel earned another $35 million for a total of $65 million. Although the film made a profit, the movie missed its target goal of $85 million globally for the opening weekend.

Some moviegoers have speculated on the reasons for the film’s modest earnings. As DC is looking to build its own connected universe similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Shazam! Fury of the Gods feels like a relic. Shazam and its sequel are stand-alone films with no connection to the new DC universe. The age lift of the main character, necessitated by delays in filming due to the COVID-19 pandemic, may have turned off some viewers as well.

The film received a Critic Score of 52% on Rotten Tomatoes, the lowest one of Sandberg’s career but an audience score of 88%, Sandberg’s highest score on that front. In any case, the director is ready to return to his horror roots after six years of working on both Shazam movies. For the record, Sandberg claims to have no regrets about exploring the superhero genre.
