Several Indie Projects Approved By SAG-AFTRA During Strike
Fear not cinema fans, many of your favorite performers are likely to be seen on both the big and small screen in new projects during the ongoing strike. This is made possible by independent production companies not tied to AMPTP affiliations and the fact that indie companies are willing to play ball with SAG-AFTRA’s demands. The union has currently approved 39 projects, two of which are with A24.
Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the union's executive director, encourages actors to participate in these independent projects. He went on to point out that if deals with independent production studios can be made that the AMPTP’s counterargument of unrealistic expectations on the part of the union becomes eroded.
RELEATED:
The two projects under A24 are Mother Mary, starring Anne Hathaway and Micaela Coel, and Death of a Unicorn, starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega. Other projects to be on the lookout for are The Rivals, featuring Matthew McConaughey, Flight Risk, starring Mark Wahlberg with Mel Gibson in the director’s chair, Dust Bunny starring Mads Mikkelsen and Sigourney Weaver, and Bride Hard, starring Rebel Wilson.
Television won’t be left out as an independent production titled The Chosen will appear as a series depicting the life of Jesus. These projects are considered by the union to be interim agreements. Once projects are approved, actors will be required to obtain a waiver from SAG-AFTRA to promote the work. For now, these projects have been approved by SAG-AFTRA because the production companies have agreed to the latest submitted terms by the union for contract negotiations.
All the productions will abide by the final deal that is to be negotiated by AMPTP.
