Sarah Michelle Gellar Puts A Stake Through The Heart Of 'Buffy' Fans Hoping For A Revival
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003), one of the most iconic series from the late 90s, and early 2000s, has been considered by Disney for a possible reboot, however, actress Sarah Michelle Galler isn’t on the same page as the studio and says that "it doesn’t need to be done."
In a recent interview with SFX Magazine, the Do Revenge actress explains candidly why she doesn’t want to reprise the role of Buffy Summers or have the studio reboot the series. For her, the message conveyed by the series is way more important than the character itself: "I’m not. I am very proud of the show that we created and it doesn’t need to be done. We wrapped that up. I am all for them continuing the story because there’s the story of female empowerment," said Gellar.

She continued by saying: "I love the way the show was left: "Every girl who has the power can have the power." It’s set up perfectly for someone else to have the power. But like I said, the metaphors of Buffy were the horrors of adolescence. I think I look young, but I am not an adolescent.”
Her refusal also comes from her having had a toxic experience during Buffy’s production which is very likely linked to showrunner Joss Whedon’s accusations of playing the actresses against each other, and whose toxic behavior led Gellar’s costar, Charisma Carpenter, to be left with performance anxiety. Back in 2021, on a social media post, Gellar shared she didn’t want to be associated with Whedon for the rest of her life, making her bond with her character and the show rather intricate.
"While I am proud to have my name associated with Buffy Summers, I don’t want to be forever associated with the name Joss Whedon…I stand with all survivors of abuse and am proud of them for speaking out."
Gellar will be making her next appearance in Wolf Pack, a Teen Wolf spinoff created by Jeff Davis, on Paramount+.
