Rockstar Games has issued a statement regarding the leak that took place on September 18, which revealed information on the next Grand Theft Auto title.

A user by the name of “teapotuberhacker” created an account to the GTA Forums on the date of September 18, making a thread which stated they had hacked Rockstar Games and claimed they had source code and testing footage of the next title in the Grand Theft Auto series. Within that opening post was a link which contained the footage.

Almost immediately, it was confirmed as being real, through strings from the source code being confirmed and provided by those who were familiar with it. The footage also looked much more elaborate for a fake, containing many realistic features and details that would take months if not years of work for one person to do.

Things turned ugly when the hacker returned to the forum, stating they would leak the source code should their demands to Rockstar Games not be met. While Take Two Interactive – Rockstar’s parent company – started issuing DMCA claims on all footage of the leaks, Jason Schreier and others with access to Rockstar had been talking with them, where they revealed that the footage was real.

On September 19, when the situation had been brought under control (including the removal of the thread where this started), Rockstar issued a statement to assure that all was well, but that they were disappointed this was the way fans had been introduced to their hard work on this next game. When it is ready, they will reveal it.

The information that has come out from the leak has shown where the next title will take place, along with the main characters and numerous features of the game. While such information cannot be controlled, and with the footage still accessible by those who know where to look, the eventual reveal of this next Grand Theft Auto game should still be a momentous occasion.
