Rick Riordan Updates Fans With News From The New 'Percy Jackson' Series Coming To Disney+
Author Rick Riordan took to his blog recently to give fans an update on the production of the anticipated Disney+ series adaptation of his Percy Jackson novels. The post, titled Back on Set with the Demigod Squad, featured high praise for the cast and crew, particularly Walker Scobell, Leah Jeffries, and Aryan Simhadri, who play Percy, Annabeth, and Grover, respectively. Riordan said, “it’s now very difficult for me to imagine Percy, Annabeth, and Grover without seeing” them, and that “[t]hey are owning these characters in the best possible way.” (emphasis in original).
Riordan assured fans that the story as filmed will be closely aligned with his original work, “almost as if the author were involved himself!” Any changes made will reportedly be in the vein of expanded content to enrich the world-building, such as additional insight into character histories, or foreshadowing of future events. The author wrote that some of these additions come as answers to questions fans posed to him over the 17 years since the publication of the first book. Riordan revealed that the Vancouver-based production has shot content covering through chapter 9 of book one, The Lightning Thief. He also confirmed earlier this year that the first season, when completed, would be eight episodes in length.
The post speaks to the fact that Riordan’s editor Steph Lurie had the opportunity to visit the set where she spent two days visiting with the cast and crew, including “the producers, directors, and designers”. The author expressed his excitement at getting to see the episodes begin to be edited: “Everything already looks so good in the raw footage, I can’t imagine how great it will be when [director] James [Bobin] gets done choosing his favorite shots and putting them all together.”
