‘Pokémon Scarlet & Pokémon Violet’ Reveal A New Ghost Pokémon Named Greavard In Time For Halloween
The spooky part of fall is about to hit its climax, and in the leadup to Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company couldn’t pass up the opportunity to reveal the first of the Paldea Region’s Ghost-type Pokémon, and he’s a good, friendly, affectionate doggy.
A Naranja Academy student has been sent to find Ghost-type Pokémon. Spooked by a Mimikyu and what she believes to be a Gengar, she encountered earlier in a previous teaser video which also showed a candle sticking out of the ground. She rediscovers the spot, and the shaggy, long-haired dog leaped out of the ground and ran around in excitement. The student grabs a stick and starts to play with the pup. She quickly finds herself losing energy until she passes out on the ground. The dog continues to lick. Yeah, that student is probably dead with the whole spooky angle. When she said she felt like the life force was being sucked out of her, that’s actually what happened. Aren’t Pokémon horror stories the best?

It’s not until a follow-up video that we are formally introduced to Greavard, the Ghost Dog Pokémon. It’s indeed a pure Ghost-type Pokémon, its English name derived from “greaves,” which is residue from melting animal fat that’s used to make candles and as dog food, “graveyard,” and possibly “Briard,” one of the long-haired dog breeds it’s probably based on along with the Catalan Sheepdog, and the Cadejo, which is more a dog-shaped spirit in Central American folklore. Its ability is Pickup. As far as moves go, it’ll be learning Bite and Crunch, but no new actions were revealed with it. It says its bites are strong enough to shatter bones.
Greavard was the 19th new Pokémon revealed for Generation IX pre-release, 20th counting Paldean Wooper. Kalos had 72 new Pokémon, Alola had 106 combined new Pokémon and Regional Forms, and Generation VIII had 116, a 96/20 split. Based on previous generations, the total is revealed anywhere from more than a quarter to a little under a sixth. We could probably get one more with just about 3 weeks left, but this could very well be it for Pokémon reveals. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet will be released on November 18, 2022, on the Nintendo Switch.
