Live-action seems to be the big thing these days, with Disney’s remaking nearly every animated movie from the 20th century into a live-action version. This appears to be spreading to other companies. It was seen in the Detective Pikachu movie, which is also getting a sequel. Now, the Pokémon Company is continuing this trend and making a live-action Pokémon drama series. But there’s a catch: it’s not going to feature “realistic” versions of the Pokémon like Detective Pikachu did.

The series will instead focus on a young woman, Madoka Akagi, reconnecting with the franchise after she moves to Tokyo to work in advertising after graduation. Her mother gives her the old copy of Pokémon Red that she had as a child, and the story will follow her journey of rediscovery and interaction with the franchise. It’s perhaps a letdown for fans who were looking for more live-action Pokémon as they saw in Detective Pikachu, but it’s also not the first time that the Pokémon Company has made films about their franchise instead of the fantasy world within. In August, it was announced that there would be a short animated series about a young girl who joins a club at school about Pokémon cards and then works her way to the top of Pokémon card competition.

Despite lacking live-action Pokémon, it should be a breath of fresh air in the genre of video game shows. For fans who are looking for live-action depictions of their favorite Pokémon, Detective Pikachu 2 is supposed to debut in 2024.
