Let’s face it, Pixar had a banger segment of the first Studio Showcase Friday evening at the D23 Expo. They went second, between the live-action films and Walt Disney Animation Studios. Some of it was expected just by months of progress, and some of it was expected from a scoop the night before, but it was all great to see.

First up, was Elemental, which was finally able to show more than the initial concept art from May, with a teaser trailer of in-progress shots and a fully finished clip. Directed by Peter Sohn, the lead voice cast was also revealed. Ember is the fire being voiced by Leah Lewis, who had a recurring role on the Charmed reboot before landing the role of Georgia Fan on the current Nancy Drew series. Mamoudou Athie, who this year has appeared in Jurassic World Dominion and Archive 81, plays Wade, the go-with-the-flow water being. The two characters are about to find they have a lot in common. It may or may not be a love story, but it is set for release on June 16, 2023.

Next up was an update on Win or Lose. This is Pixar’s first full-length animated series, and also their first series not based on one of their previous movies. Presumably, this means 22-minute episodes, compared to the 8-minute runtimes of Dug Days and Cars on the Road. First announced at Disney Investor Day 2020, Friday’s showcase provided first-look images and revealed the casting of Will Forte as Coach Dan. The series follows a softball team through several players’ points of view of the same week, each employing different animation styles.

The studio’s spring 2024 release is Elio, directed by Coco writer and co-director Adrian Molina. Elio, voiced by Yonas Kibreab, is an 11-year-old boy who gets caught up in a top-secret military operation run by his mother (voiced by America Ferrera) investigating a deep space transmission. He’s transported across the galaxy and gets mistaken for Earth’s intergalactic ambassador.
