Phil Spencer Discusses The Future Of Xbox

For the last couple of weeks, the internet has been afire with rumors and speculation about the future of the Xbox after it was leaked that Xbox is going to release exclusives on rival systems like the PS5 and Nintendo Switch. This led to claims that games like Starfield and Indiana Jones would no longer be exclusive to Xbox, prompting Phil Spencer to announce a special Xbox Podcast to address the future of Xbox.

Turns out there wasn’t much of anything to get worried about. During the half-hour podcast, Spencer, Sarah Bond, and Matt Booty answered questions and concerns about the rumors and leaks. He even made a comment at the beginning that they were going to start with something else, but he wanted to address the concerns right off the bat.

According to Phil Spencer, there are going to be Xbox exclusives coming to PS5 and Nintendo Switch, but it’s only four titles. Two of them are games that have been exclusive for some time now, and the other two are smaller games that they feel are best played by a wider audience. He wouldn’t discuss what the games were, but according to insider information, the four games are Sea of ThievesHi-Fi RushPentiment, and Grounded. Spencer then answered the direct question about Starfield and Indiana Jones being non-exclusive now, and the answer was no. They will remain exclusive.

That matter of exclusivity was also addressed alongside concerns about game libraries. Matt Booty talked about how Game Pass will remain an Xbox-only exclusive, and that all their titles will be available on day one on Game Pass. So that’s the incentive to continue to buy Xbox consoles, which Spencer and Bond stated are still in the plans for Xbox’s future. That future just includes their “play Xbox anywhere” goal through the cloud. Bond also let slip (or by design) that they are working on the next generation console, and it will be the biggest leap forward technologically in console history.

It was a largely reassuring session, and by some verbal hints it was not what they intended to originally to talk about, but due to the reactivity of the internet, they had to pivot and address people’s concerns. Those concerns seem to have been raised in futility. Xbox isn’t going anywhere, and both Booty and Bond talked about their upcoming June direct and information about the next generation during the holidays.
