Paul Mescal Is Set To Star In Ridley Scott's 'Gladiator' Sequel
The sequel to Ridley Scott's Gladiator has cast its leading actor. Irish actor Paul Mescal (Normal People, God's Creatures) is reportedly in talks to star in the sequel to the 2000 sword-and-sandal epic. The 26-year-old actor is best known for his role in the drama miniseries Normal People which garnered Mescal an Emmy nomination. Mescal also received praise for his performance in the feature films Aftersun and God's Creatures.
Ridley Scott will return to produce the Gladiator sequel with David Scarpa (All the Money in the World) writing the script. Costume designer Janty Yates and production designer Arthur Max, who worked on the original film, will also be returning.

Gladiator, which starred Russell Crowe as the ancient Roman general and gladiator Maximus Decimus Meridius, kicked off a revival of sword-and-sandal movies such as 300 and Troy. As Maximus died at the end of Gladiator, Mescal will reportedly play Lucius, the son of Lucilla and nephew of Emperor Commodus (played by Joaquin Phoenix in the original movie).
Production on the Gladiator sequel will have to wait until after Ridley Scott finishes production on the upcoming Napoleon historical epic, which is set to be released in 2023 on Apple TV+. The film will also star Joaquin Phoenix portraying Emperor Napoleon, alongside Vanessa Kirby (Mission: Impossible - Fallout) as Empress Josephine.
