If you thought Patrick Stewart returning to play Professor Charles Xavier, or at least his Earth-838 variant, in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was a treat, there may be a second, more straightforward helping coming.

Back in September, it was revealed that Ryan Reynolds had recruited Hugh Jackman to co-star in Deadpool 3 with him, reprising his role of Wolverine from the same 20th Century Fox-produced X-Men films he starred with Stewart in. It seems that the writers of the upcoming film, the returning Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, might be crafting a scenario from which to actually pluck the mutant for the romp, or possibly return him to after. This is because Stewart, doing press for the final season of Star Trek: Picard, told ComicBook’s Jamie Lovett "I've been told to standby. I know nothing more than that, honest." Filming begins in May.

Stewart’s appearance in Multiverse of Madness followed Evan Peters’s casting as Ralph Bohner (a man charmed to be Wanda’s deceased brother Pietro/Quicksilver) in WandaVision, marking the start of a period where actors of the previous franchise reprise their roles. It’s only been the three thus far, and there’s no guarantee the behavior will continue much beyond that. With several dates for films unannounced around and between Phase Six’s Avengers films, it’s expected the MCU’s native variants of the X-Men, with new actors in the roles will finally debut there. Whether Stewart gets to play Professor X one more time or not, Deadpool 3 is set to be released in theaters on November 6, 2024, as the first film in the Phase Six slate.
