A new video game adaptation is hitting the road. The game Pacific Drive, which was released in February of 2024, was just picked up by James Wan’s production company Atomic Monster for development into a TV show.

Pacific Drive is a unique game developed by Ironwood Studios and focuses on a protagonist crossing a warped part of the American West Coast in a trusty retro station wagon that can talk. The game has other more surreal elements based on the energies warping the landscape, with driving gameplay as a key focus, survival elements with resource collection and seeking to avoid hostile forces roaming the terrain, and a killer electronic soundtrack to boot.

Despite receiving a positive though low-key reception in the general gaming world since its release, with an audience score of 6.3 on Metacritic at the time of writing, Pacific Drive has seen greater success in the category of awards. It was nominated as Best Debut Indie Game at the 2024 Game Awards and was similarly nominated in the categories of Best Gameplay and Best Game at the 2024 BIG Festival, walking away with Best Gameplay. In June of 2024, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association added the game to their reading list for the Nebula Awards.

Atomic Monster has a lot of upcoming projects on the horizon for a range of streaming services, and while its adaptation of Pacific Drive only has its executive producers, Michael Clear, Rob Hackett, and Jeff Ludwig, with no home yet, they will certainly find one for the adaptation soon.
