Original Pink Ranger Amy Jo Johnson Explains Why She’s Not In The ‘Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: Once And Always’ Special

When the Ranger cast for Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: Once and Always (the 30th-anniversary special) was revealed in October, seven of the ten Rangers were at least represented, if not present. Two of the three missing cast members had specific absences that were abundantly clear: Austin St. John (original Red Ranger Jason) had legal troubles, and Jason David Frank (Tommy Oliver) had retired from the franchise. So the last without an explicit reason for absence was Kimberly Hart, the original Pink Ranger played by Amy Jo Johnson.

On Wednesday, following the Tuesday announcement of the special’s title and premiere date, Johnson made her reason known, and all in all, it wasn’t an unexpected one. She tweeted “For the record I never said no…I just didn’t say yes to what was offered. But other fun stuff is in-store! Looking forward to watching my friends kick ass! #PowerRangers30”

Power Rangers has always been known to be made on the cheap. Heck Austin, Walter Jones, and Thuy Trang originally departed on a pay dispute. Johnson, who would go on to star in such series as Felicity and Flashpoint before becoming a director, including for Superman & Lois, hasn’t appeared in the series since her 1995 departure. She only appeared in the two subsequent movies, Turbo’s and the 2017 reboot. Hart’s successor, Kat Hillard who played Catherine Sutherland, has appeared in the 25th-anniversary episode “Dimensions in Danger” and seems to be a major player in Once and Always.

It’s completely okay that what was offered wasn’t enough for Johnson. That they were able to entice those who did sign on is probably a miracle for this show. Whatever she has cooking at her end to mark the occasion will hopefully be a great supplement to what the show itself is giving us. Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: Once and Always premieres worldwide on April 19 on Netflix.
