While picket signs aren’t on display, actors are no longer marching down Los Angeles with fellow writers, and agreements are closer to being made, the SAG-AFTRA negotiators spent the afternoon in a “holding pattern” as the union waited for a response from management to its most recent counterproposal. This counterproposal details actors’ concerns about their positions as television and film stars during the rise of AI and their residual pay for their work being on streaming services.

Amid the rise of AI, management believes the union is “focused on too many ‘what if’ scenarios” involving AI technology, Conversely, actors still maintain that AI is the “existential threat” to their livelihoods that fueled much of the strike. The strike, documented as the longest strike against film and television in the last hundred years, shows no signs of compromising as its actors’ approach with a business-savvy mindset. According to Variety, the members of the SAG-AFTRA union “look forward to continuing bargaining with [AMPTP] tomorrow.”

Filmgoers and television viewers shall wait with bated breath until actors come back to screens once again. History will no doubt continue to be made amid the strike.
