New 'The Hunger Games' Prequel Book and Movie to Feature Fan Favorite Haymitch Abernathy
If you are a fan of The Hunger Games, the odds are in your favor! Suzanne Collins will be dropping the next prequel, titled The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping, on March 18th, 2025. But within hours of this shock announcement, Lionsgate also put on their social media that a movie adaptation will follow.
Suzanne Collins’ publishers, Scholastic said that the new book will be set forty years after The Hunger Games: A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which puts it right on the second quarter quell. And yes, that is Haymitch Abernathy’s games.

Haymitch is a fan favourite so there’s going to be a lot of interest in his story. Katniss’ mentor was involved in one of the most lethal games, as it had double the number of contestants. Although we know Haymitch makes it out, according to the other books, Snow killed his mother, younger brother, and girlfriend after his victory. It’s why Haymitch tells Peeta and Katniss to keep up the pretence of a relationship after they have won their games. Sunrise on the Reaping will likely delve deep into the sad events that led Haymitch to turn on the Capitol. Don’t expect a happy ending.
Another tribute who could feature heavily in the new prequel is Maysilee Donner, who also participated in the second quarter quell. Maysilee is the original owner of the mockingjay pin and she saves Haymitch’s life
The movie adaption of The Hunger Games: A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes was announced in June 2019, a year before the book had been released. It’s not too much of a surprise that they have a film adaptation of The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping hot on the heels of the book reveal. The release date for the movie is estimated as 20th November 2026. Francis Lawrence is in talks to take up the director’s chair, which is no surprise considering he worked on all the other movies. The production team of Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson will reportedly also return. There’s no word on casting as of yet, but with that short timeline, Lionsgate is probably already making calls.
