New 'Terminator' And 'Robocop' Games On The Way
On July 7th, Nacon Gaming announced the upcoming releases of 2 new games; RoboCop: Rogue City and Terminator: Survival Project. The announcement came with a trailer for each game and an estimated release date of June 2023 for RoboCop.
RoboCop: Rogue City is a First Person Shooter starring the beloved cyborg police officer, Alex Murphy. The Alex Murphy in the game is not only modeled after Peter Weller, the original RoboCop actor but is voiced by him as well! In the gameplay trailer, we can see there is a “lock on” style of shooting, exactly what the RoboCop we love is known for. The trailer also seems to indicate that the gameplay is linear, where each level will only be visited once during a standard playthrough.

The trailer indicates that the start of the game is kicked off by the loss of 21 police officers. As the city starts its fall to anarchy, a local gang, likely the main antagonists of the game, takes over a new station. We see 2 gang members throw a man from a skyscraper window, many part goers flee as the protagonist enters an underground rave and engages in a firefight with gang members there, and many more scenes of Alex Murphy engaging in combat with gang members in various locations.
There are several RoboCop games, the oldest simply being RoboCop from 1988. It’s a classic arcade game made almost exclusively off of events from the original movie. Following the majority of games of the era, the second game in the RoboCop franchise was named after the movie, RoboCop 2, and also followed a playable version of the plot of the 2nd movie. The first of the RoboCop games to turn away from following the plot of movies was RoboCop Versus The Terminator, a game released originally in 1993, but for various systems through 1995. In this game, players saw RoboCop and The Terminators created by Skynet face off head-to-head.
A more recent game that featured our favorite robotic policeman was the 2014 release of RoboCop. This game was released as a tie-in to the 2014 remake of the RoboCop film. It was a 3rd person shooter that was developed and published by Glu Mobile for iOS and Android devices. Although it is free-to-play, it, like many other mobile games, is pay-to-win.
Terminator: Survival Project was announced also, but no estimated release date was provided during the announcement. In the reveal trailer released, we can hear someone breathing heavily, suggesting that whoever is breathing heavily was running shortly before the trailer begins. Given the proclivity of survivors in the Terminator universe to run from the terminators, we can safely assume that whoever our protagonist is has been running from at least one terminator. Unfortunately, not much else is revealed in the trailer. Given the name of the game, it is most likely an apocalyptic survival game, akin to the Dying Light series with an emphasis on running, gathering resources, and surviving rather than standing and fighting. Per the details on the reveal trailer, the game will be available on PC and consoles, but there is no estimated release date yet, just a message about it being released “in the distant future”.
While we may not have many details on this new Terminator game, there are many existing games to enjoy while we wait. After the movie's release in 1984, several games by the name The Terminator were released. The original game, released in 1990, was a DOS (Disk Operating System) game that focused on the player protecting Sarah Connor from the Terminator through the actions of Kyle Reese. Many of the Terminator games release shortly after a movie, with the latest being Terminator: Dark Fate, released for iOS and Android on October 18, 2019, in the US and globally by November 8, 2019. The game is free-to-play but has many avenues for microtransactions. A sequel game by the name of Terminator: Dark Fate - Defiance is expected to release in the second half of 2022. This game is a real-time strategy game focusing on the war between the humans and the A. I. known as the Legion, which takes place after Judgement Day.
