Hasbro Announces An Exclusive Black Series Boba Fett Action Figure For San Diego Comic-Con

To quote Spaceballs, “Merchandising! Where the real money is made!” Star Wars and toys are like DC and Batman. You can’t have one without the other. Even when A New Hope first came out in 1977, the need for Star Wars toys was palpable. From the classic Kenner action figures to the plastic lightsabers that would always get stuck in their hilts, Star Wars has always been a juggernaut of the toy industry, luring in millions upon millions of dollars every year.

Toys have also been an area of the Star Wars franchise that Disney hasn’t been slouching on in the slightest. In partnership with toy and game-producing legend Hasbro, Lucasfilm has been providing fans with tons of new figures and collectibles to spend obscene amounts of money on and add to their enormous collections of Star Wars memorabilia.

Recently, Hasbro announced that they would be participating in this year’s upcoming San Diego Comic-Con. While they won’t have any on-site exclusives to purchase at the convention, they will have a booth where attendees can pick up a one-time use limited quantity QR code. This code will allow them to pre-order exclusive items to be shipped to them at a later date.

This year, Hasbro will offer various new products from their franchises, including Transformers, GI Joe, and Dungeons & Dragons. In addition, the Hasbro booth will host giveaways, trivia sessions, and autograph signings from various artists and voice actors. But for Star Wars fans, the most exciting announcement comes in the form of an exclusive figure that fans of the current Star Wars comics may recognize.

As revealed by ComicBook.com this past Wednesday, one of Hasbro’s convention-exclusive items this year will be Star Wars: Black Series Boba Fett (In Disguise). This figure is of the famous bounty hunter Boba Fett with his usual armor and weapons but painted entirely black. While this type of differently painted figure is far from anything new in terms of Star Wars toys, what makes this one special is the context behind its existence.

In the Alpha issue of The War of the Bounty Hunters crossover comic, Fett made an emergency stop on Nar Shaddaa to stop the carbonite-frozen Han Solo from melting on his way to Jabba the Hutt’s palace on Tatooine. While he was able to secure help from a Besalisk named Doc Ragon, he had to do the doctor a favor in return. The favor in question was killing a Nar Kanji pit warrior named Wyrmen Lictor in a gladiatorial death match. Not wanting to be recognized, Fett painted his armor and equipment completely black and entered the arena under the name of “Beskar Brawler Jango.”

Having a new figure that directly references an event from a recent Star Wars comic is quite exciting. This opens the door for future figures based on characters and variants of those characters, specifically from the comics. In the past, we’ve gotten figures based on popular comic characters, such as Doctor Aphra and 0-0-0. As an avid reader of the current comics, I would love to see Hasbro stray from the usual candidates for collectible figures and bring more obscure, lesser-known characters into the world of Star Wars toys.
