When Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019, they also gained the rights to the Percy Jackson series, which Fox had secured back in 2004. The first two novels of Rick Riordan's fantasy series have been turned into feature films in 2010 and 2013, which deviated quite drastically from their originals; Percy is several years older than in the books, which also include events and characters that are not present in the movies, and vice versa.

In May 2020, Riordan announced that his book series will be adapted into a TV show for Disney+, which will apparently remain much closer to his novels' tone and events. Walter Scobell (The Adam Project) will play the titular demigod, with Leah Jeffries and Aryan Simhadri playing his friends Annabeth Chase (the daughter of Athena) and Grover Underwood (a satyr).

Toby Stephens (Black Sails, Lost in Space) recently joined the series' cast, and a behind-the-scenes photo from one of the series's writers now confirms that the 53-year-old actor from Fitzrovia, England will play the god Poseidon, Percy's father.

The general premise of Riordan's book series is that Greek mythology is real. While the domicile of the gods (Olympus) is no longer in Greek but in Manhattan, many of them still have children with humans, so-called "half-bloods," who are principally mortal, but possess extraordinary abilities. One of them is Percy Jackson. Each summer, these demigods come together in Camp Half-Blood, where they prepare for their fights against the "Monsters" - giants, Titans, and other creatures from Greek mythology.

The first season of Disney's Percy Jackson and the Olympians deals with Percy finding out that he is no "normal" human and with his quest for finding the lightning of Zeus, which the 12-year-old is accused of having stolen. Rick Riordan wrote the script for the pilot episode together with Jon Steinberg, with Jams Bobin directing. Steinberg also oversees the production of the series with his partner, Dan Shotz.

Although filming of the show just wrapped a few days ago, the series won’t premiere until the end of the year, or possibly even in early 2024.
