Netflix Kills New Live-Action 'Masters Of The Universe' After Spending Millions In Production Costs
For years, fans of Masters of the Universe have waited with bated breath for a new live-action version of their beloved series. Sadly, they will once again have to wait until another company picks up the film. This past week, several sources confirmed that Netflix is canceling the film. Netflix pulled the plug on production, despite spending rumored over $30 million. The money spent was used for development costs and to retain lead actor, Kyle Allen (American Horror Story), and directors Aaron and Adam Nee (The Lost City). One of the rumored reasons for the scrap was that the budget was growing at a rapid pace, which made Netflix nervous.
After confirming that the film was no longer at Netflix, a spokesperson for Mattel declined to comment on the future of the film, including whether or not a different studio was interested in the film. Netflix had no comment about the matter. When the movie was announced at Netflix last year, executive producer of Mattel Films, Robbie Brenner said, “Masters of the Universe is an iconic property that shaped the imaginations of an entire generation of kids with the message of becoming the best version of yourself.”

Debuting in 1982, Masters of the Universe was released as an animated cartoon alongside a toy line produced by Mattel. A live-action film was released in 1987 and was panned by both critics and audiences. It has since found a second life as a cult favorite. The animated series has had multiple resurrections, including 2002’s He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and most recently (and ironically), Netflix’s Masters of the Universe: Revelation. It also spawned the female-driven spinoffs She-Ra Princess of Power and Netflix’s She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.
Hopefully, another studio will pick up the pieces and give fans the live-action version of Masters of the Universe they truly deserve.
