After disappointing box office results from The Flash, DC is putting their hopes on Blue Beetle. James Gunn, who recently took the reins to revive the DC movie universe, stopped by a test screening and was pleased with what he saw. Xolo Maridueña who plays the titular superhero described his experience working with the former Marvel director, “I just remember James Gunn has this really excited energy to him all the time. But them coming into this position of the movie already being made, and then being like, ‘All right, let’s see what we have here’ – it was very rewarding for them to actually respond well to it and enjoy it. They had their notes here and there story-wise, but I think, in capturing the essence of Jaime and the Reyes family, [they] think we did a really great job.”

The creators behind the project think the film’s strength is the lower stakes that Jamie Reyes will face in the film. Instead of world-shattering events, Reyes will take on ordinary everyday issues with his newfound Blue Beetle powers. Maridueña explained his character’s journey, "We aren't dealing with an alien invasion that's going to take over the whole world, or a monster that's going to destroy the city. ... This is a movie about issues that not only Jaime faces, but the whole Reyes family, and greater Palmera City. All of us can relate to their struggle.” Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 turned out to be a box office hit for Marvel. With his approval of the test screening, Blue Beetle could do the same for DC. The film will release in theaters on August 18, 2023.
