Neil Gaiman Shares His Uncertainty For A Second Season Of 'The Sandman' On Netflix

The long-awaited adaptation of the cult classic comic series The Sandman was released early this August with positive critical reception, fan fervor, and notable streaming success. Although the show is currently in its third week on top of the Global Top 10, it appears there may be no guarantees when it comes to Netflix producing a second season.
Fans would think that being number 1 in a swathe of countries (including the U.S., U.K., India, Australia, and Greece, to count a few) and in the top 10 of 93 countries in total, with almost 127.5 million hours watched, a second season would be inevitable. However, series creator Neil Gaiman offered his thoughts when asked about the potential for a second season in a series of tweets this past weekend-expressing uncertainty.

As is often the case, the cost of the show’s production is the major question for the future. Gaiman explained that The Sandman “is a really expensive show.” Each episode reportedly costs about $15 million, half that of the reported cost per episode for the streaming giant’s tentpole franchise, Stranger Things.
In further tweets answering why “S2 is even a question,” Gaiman elaborated:
“And for Netflix to release the money to let us make another season we have to perform incredibly well. So yes, we’ve been the top show in the world for the last two weeks. That still may not be enough.”
There may be a chance that the immensely popular Netflix series will not return and deny audiences a seemingly much-anticipated Season 2.
The Sandman is currently streaming on Netflix.
