Disney+ Removes 'Avatar' From Their Streaming Library Ahead Of The Film's Theatrical Re-Release
We are officially in the final stretch for the release of Avatar: The Way of Water, which is set to premiere worldwide on December 16, 2022. The 2009 original will also be available in theaters on September 23. Disney has also used this opportunity to remove the movie from its Disney+ library, counting on the revenue from the re-release.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, this re-release could benefit both the public and the industry itself. Disney is getting something out there in September, which is usually a slow month for movies in general. The public also gets the opportunity to watch Avatar again, but this time in 4K High Dynamic Range. Avatar was already visually amazing back in 2009. It heavily contributed to the VFX sector, bringing more than $ 2.84 billion worldwide. By improving on some aspects of it, director James Cameron shows that his original piece is still relevant 13 years later, and that it has enough support amongst fans for the studio to greenlight a sequel.
The first movie told the story of Sam Worthington’s Jake Sully, a disabled Marine who gets a new chance to serve his country, and Zöe Saldana’s Neytiri, a native from the exo-moon Pandora. Sully, now in his Na’Vi body, falls in love with Neytiri and helps her people protect their homes from being mined. Avatar: The Way of Water’s trailer, which was released in May of this year, shows Jake’s new family with Neyriti joining together to fight for their world again. Other actors returning for the sequel include Sigourney Weaver (now as Kiri, previously as Dr. Grace Augustine), Stephen Lang (Miles Quaritch), and Joel David Moore (Norm Spellman).
