Microsoft Announces Layoff Of 1,900 Xbox And Blizzard Employees
The video game industry continues to struggle as January approaches, with Microsoft announcing the layoff of 1,900 workers. Activision Blizzard will see a majority of the loss in the workforce.
Microsoft’s gaming CEO Phil Spencer released a memo to the staff on Thursday morning explaining how Blizzard is “committed to aligning on a strategy and an execution plan with a sustainable cost structure that will support the whole of our growing business.”

Spencer continued the memo explaining how the company planned to “provide our full support to those who are impacted during the transition, including severance benefits informed by local employment laws. Those whose roles will be impacted will be notified, and we ask that you please treat your departing colleagues with the respect and compassion that is consistent with our values.” He closed by saying how the company plans to grow business and support strategies that bring more consumers into the gaming market: “I’m confident as ever in your ability to create and nurture the games, stories and worlds that bring players together.”
Mike Ybarra, Blizzard’s president, posted on X that he was leaving the company as well: “It’s an incredibly hard day and my energy and support will be focused on all those amazing individuals impacted…I also want to let you all know today is my last day at Blizzard. Leading Blizzard through an incredible time and being part of the team, shaping it for the future ahead, was an absolute honor.”
