Matt Reeves' Sequel To 'The Batman' Delayed A Year
Robert Pattison had his turn as the iconic Bruce Wayne in 2022’s The Batman, but the sequel directed by Matt Reeves keeps delaying its release rate. Originally intended for October 6, 2025, the Hollywood strikes pushed the date back a year. Now, the film is set to release on October 1, 2027, putting five years between Pattison’s appearances as the superhero. James Gunn, co-CEO of the DCU, dismissed concerns about the time gap. He said, “To be fair, a 5 year gap or more is common in sequels. 7 years between Alien and Aliens. 14 years between Incredibles. 7 years between the first two Terminators. 13 years between Avatars. 36 years between Top Guns. And, of course, 6 years between Guardians Vol. 2 and Vol. 3.”
While details about the film are still scarce, Reeves confirmed that Colin Farrell will reprise his role as the Penguin from the the Max series. This series of Batman films will not be considered canon to the wider DCU but will be its own standalone film series. The October 6, 2026, slot will be taken by an untitled Tom Cruise project. Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, Sadra Huller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, and Riz Ahmed have also joined the project. The film is described as “The most powerful man in the world embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.” Another Pattison film, Mickey 17, has been moved from an April 2025 release date to March 7, 2025.
