'Macross' Is Coming To Disney+, Sort Of
Fans of the 1984 epic animated sci-fi series Robotech will remember that the 85-episode series was cobbled together from three different Japanese animated mecha series, Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Calvary Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber Mospeada. These three different and unrelated series were combined into one epic series with separate but interrelated storylines, The Macross Saga (Episodes 1-36), The Southern Cross (Episodes 37-60), and The New Generation (Episodes 61-85) under the banner of Robotech. In the US, following the end of the original Robotech series, there have been various attempts by the show’s license owner, Harmony Gold USA to create an expanded universe for the series, including a Robotech movie, Robotech The Movie: The Untold Story (partially adapted from the anime series Megazone 23), an aborted 65-episode The Macross Saga sequel series, The Sentinels (which got adapted into novels written by Star Wars novel legends Brian Daley and James Luceno).
In recent years, Harmony Gold attempted to continue the final storyline of the Robotech series, The New Generation and The Sentinels, with an animated original story, The Shadow Chronicles (featuring Mark Hamill and much of the original voice talent from Robotech). Harmony Gold also started a Kickstarter for another attempted Robotech series/story, Robotech Academy. However, unfortunately, the Kickstarter did not raise the needed funds, and the plans for it were scrapped. Robotech has continued to live on in novelizations of the series, original spin-off novels, toys, and other merchandise, comics, and soundtrack releases.

In Japan, however, a movie, Do You Remember Love? and several sequel series and movies were produced that continue the storyline of Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, including Macross II: Lovers Again, Macross F, Macross Zero, Macross Plus, Macross 7, Macross Delta, Macross F Movie 1, Macross F Movie 2, Macross 7 Movie, Macross Dynamite Dynamite 7, Macross XX, and Macross 7 Plus. It was recently announced that most of these series will be coming to Disney Plus shortly (as well as to Blu-Ray via Right Stuf Anime), however, this exciting news also comes with a huge caveat, specifically that, due to licensing rights issues with Harmony Gold, the current owner of Robotech, the original Macross series and its accompanying movie, Do You Remember Love?, will not be made available in the US (though it will be available on Disney+ in Japan). This is certain to disappoint fans who want an opportunity to see the series that the original 36-episode storyline of Robotech is based on, as well as its Japanese movie. It is hoped that eventually there will be some kind of solution that will bring them over to Disney+ in the US as well.
