Morale continues to crater at Blizzard Entertainment due to management shifts and poor market performance from Overwatch 2. The game’s heroes were recently decoupled from the paid battle pass plan, leaving many players wondering if the sequel failed.

For context, Blizzard Entertainment employees receive bonus checks twice a year (one in August and the second in March) based on the financial success of the projects they work on. Employees are given target goals for the year and will receive a portion of their bonus upon their singular success and the company hitting its profit goals.

In August 2023, management told team members they were not to expect any bonus checks due to the game’s poor reception from players. In March 2024, employees were informed they would not receive any bonus percentage.

This profit-sharing bonus structure was enabled in 2023, whereas employees received a bonus based on their overall company performance beforehand. The policy shift came at the end of a decade-long management battle between Blizzard Entertainment and its parent company, Activision Blizzard.

Mike Morhaime and J. Allen Brack, former presidents at Blizzard, favored employees receiving bonuses company-wide, regardless of how their projects performed. Activision’s CEO, Bobby Kotick, argued that projects that proved themselves in the marketplace should be rewarded more.

In a statement released by Blizzard spokesman Andrew Reynolds, he said, “Decisions like these are in service to our community and based on feedback, which is also good for our business and the future of the game.” He continued to explain how the company is “exploring new experiences, big and small, which will push the frontiers of the Overwatch universe.”
