'M3GAN' is The Breakout Hit No One Expected
Killer doll movies have a reputation for being absolutely terrifying (Annabelle) or bonkers (Child’s Play). M3GAN manages to merge both by being aware of its absurdity, which led to word-of-mouth filling seats, making M3GAN the underdog of January. Blowing past the projected $17-20 million, M3GAN took in $30.2 million at the box office, settling in at second place, behind juggernaut Avatar: The Way of Water. Internationally, the film has generated $14.8 million to date, taking its global total to $45 million.
Thanks to a teaser trailer that went viral, and a persistent marketing campaign that saw a gaggle of actresses dressed up as M3GAN clones infiltrating everywhere including an NFL game and various landmarks throughout New York City, the film managed to stay in everyone’s minds long enough for folks to head to the theater.

M3GAN is written by Akela Cooper (Malignant) and produced by Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity, Us, The Black Phone) and James Wan (Saw, The Conjuring). With that kind of creative force setting the film up for success, audiences were able to thoroughly enjoy a solid balance of horror, humor, and emotion.
January is usually a difficult time for cinema, with the occasional breakthrough hit. According to Variety, M3GAN is the first movie to open to more than $30 million in the first week of the new year in over a decade, the last time being 2012’s The Devil Inside which opened with $33.7 million.
