Lucasfilm Has Applied For Three New Trademarks In The EU Hinting At A New 'Star Wars' Project

With the sparse amount of Star Wars news coming out over the last couple of weeks and not much content dropping until the later half of August with the release of Star Wars: Andor and Season 2 of The Bad Batch, any piece of Star Wars news is sure to be scrutinized and analyzed for a deeper meaning. A recent filing of some trademarks within the European Union is raising some eyebrows due to the implications entailed.  On July 26, 2022, Lucasfilm LTD LLC filed the following names: “The Great Circle”, “The Galactic Circle” and “Circle of Resistance”.

On the surface, it may seem like Lucasfilm is simply hedging their bets on some potential products coming down the line, but what could it mean?  The timeline for these names seems to put us in the sequel trilogy as Disney and Lucasfilm identify these movies (represented by Episodes 7, 8 and 9) as the “Age of Resistance”. The curious part is the use of the word “Circle”. The “Circle of Resistance”, one can assume, refers to the circle of resistance fighters. “The Galactic Circle” could refer to the group who ran the First/Final Order, while “The Great Circle” could mean those in the Sith and the Jedi as it appears to be a more other-worldly phrase.

However, a more obscure Star Wars reference to which this could be a nod is the Ring Theory of story-telling which has been associated with George Lucas and his tenure as the progenitor of the franchise. In short, the Ring Theory means the sequence of narrative elements that begins with The Phantom Menace and progresses to Revenge of the Sith where things come to an intense end, reversing the story-telling and seriousness of events through Episodes 4, 5 and 6. It is an intense theory and a well-researched one at that, but it could be something Lucasfilm is using to help flesh out the sequel trilogy.
