Kevin Feige Has Stated That 'Fantastic Four' Will Not Be An Origin Story

Modern comic versions of the Fantastic Four against a galactic backdrop.

With SDCC in the books, Marvel fans everywhere are still digesting all the announcements Kevin Feige and others doled out during their mega panel in hall H. Among those announcements was the news that the highly anticipated Fantastic Four reboot will kick off phase six of the MCU in November of 2024. As if that confirmation isn’t exciting enough itself, Kevin Feige recently stated that the legendary foursome will not be getting another origin story. While there is certain to be a divide between fans who are either happy or angry over this new revelation, one question that will undoubtedly be asked plenty over the next two years is, “if not an origin story, then what will it be?”

The Fantastic Four are among some of the most famous superhero teams in the Marvel universe and across all comics. As such, it’s astonishing to think the MCU will be in its 16th year when they make their official debut (as far as we know). Due to the age of the MCU, it is possible that the reason an origin story isn’t in the cards for Marvel’s first family is that the universe simply won’t have time for the team to mature into its prime. Looking at the MCU’s updated schedule over the next few years, we already know that within one year of the Fantastic Four’s inception there will be not one, but TWO Avengers films. With the Kang dynasty and Secret Wars hot on their heels, Reed, Sue, Ben and Johnny will need to be seasoned pros to pull their weight in such a populated multiverse of heroes.

Reasons for skipping the origin story aside, the only remaining mystery is which villain will have the honor of being the four’s first big screen antagonist in the MCU. Given both previous Fantastic Four installments used Dr. Doom as their first foil, on top of the fact that Doom plays a significant role in the comic version of Secret Wars, it would not be surprising if this new film goes in a different direction. Of course, there is the obvious choice of Kang, as he is a major player in the Multiverse Saga as well as an iconic enemy of the Fantastic Four. Another option is to dive into the Negative Zone with a story centered around the tyrant Annihilus. Or will they plunder deep space with an epic involving Silver Surfer and the planet eater Galactus? The possibilities, much like the multiverse, are infinite.
