The SNES is notable in Mario franchise history for starting several spin-off series. It started the Mario Kart series and spawned the Yoshi platformer series with Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island. Near to the end of the SNES’ life, a collaboration between Nintendo and Square (now Square-Enix) brought Mario and friends into the RPG world.

Released in 1996, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars had Mario and Bowser team up to take on a new threat to the Mushroom Kingdom. Limited in success owing to the timing of its release (the N64 arriving just a few months after), it still had a following and proved successful enough for Nintendo to create its own RPG series. Fans have now made it known that they want a book about the game through a campaign of Boss Fight Books.

Starting in 2014, Boss Fight Books is a series that puts focus on one particular game per book. With each season of releases, backers of the current season’s Kickstarter campaign get to vote for one game to be featured as a book. The options for season six included Super Mario RPG alongside Harvest Moon, Pikmin, and Jet Set Radio. The vote concluded with Super Mario RPG as the winner.

Boss Fight Books is now looking for pitches from writers who would like to talk about the game. Each game in this currently 29-book series is penned by a different writer, discussing a subject about that game that is close to their heart. Such as the Kingdom Hearts II book penned by Alexa Ray Corriea that focuses on the core theme of friendship.
