Since Guardians of the Galaxy’s debut in 2014, fans of the outer space outlaws have laughed and cried as they see themselves in one or more characters. With each installment, each Guardian experiences a personal catharsis, grows as a character, and ultimately rises to the challenge presented to them individually and collectively. Thanos is now gone, and the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will find the lovable outcasts dealing with the personal fallout from Infinity War and Endgame. Recent press events have given insight into where the audience can expect to see the heroes on their journey.

In an interview with Deadline at South by Southwest (SXSW), actress Karen Gillan shared details about her character Nebula:

"… we're seeing Nebula post the death of the source of her trauma, Thanos. He's been eliminated from the story, and now we're seeing her character become a little bit of the person that she should have been had that not happened to her."

Gillan further expounded on Nebula's assimilation into a healthy semblance of family life:

"… her new family with the new Guardians and letting love in for the first time, rather than the defense mechanism always triggering. Allowing her to be loved and to love."

Nebula first began as the adopted daughter of Thanos and was made to be a machine for fighting. In the last decade of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), she has since evolved beyond that role.

Despite Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 reportedly being the final film in the franchise and main cast members such as Dave Bautista (Drax) seemingly moving on, Gillan has said in a separate interview with ScreenRant that she would love to reprise the role of Nebula in a Disney+ series and explore the character’s backstory. While Nebula has become an integral part of the MCU, there has been no news nor discussion of such a project.
