Neil Patrick Harris Joins 'Doctor Who' For 60th Anniversary In 2023

Neil Patrick Harris

Well, Doctor Who just got even more Legen (wait for it) dary! Doctor Howser and Doctor Horrible meet a new doctor as Neil Patrick Harris has joined the show for its milestone 60th anniversary. The language is admittedly as vague as ever regarding how much Doctor Who we’re getting next year, but the omission of “special” is notable, looking more like there will be some sort of series preceding it. That incoming returning showrunner calls the yet-to-be-identified character “greatest enemy the Doctor has ever faced” might be good news for recurrence but let’s not speculate too much.

Now, I’m sure plenty of people were shocked by this casting, I was too, but it’s part of a bigger trend of American actors in international productions. Not coordinated, mind you, but still happening. In Thirteen’s run we had Chris Noth as Jack Robertson in “Spiders in the UK” and “Revolution of the Daleks”, and back when Torchwood became an American co-production for Miracle Day it had actors like Bill Pullman and Wayne Knight. Friends actor David Schwimmer currently stars in the British series Intelligence, which streams stateside on Peacock. And let’s face it, with so many Doctor Who actors getting big roles in Marvel and DC film and TV, there’s got to be some reciprocation, right? Knowing Harris’s performances, he’s going to do amazing, and it will be a sight to behold.
