Legendary Game Designer Of 'Settlers of Catan', Klaus Teuber, Passes Away At The Age Of 70
Klaus Teuber, board game revolutionary and creator of Settlers in Catan, passed away on April 1, 2023. The news was reported on the Catan website, stating it was due to “a brief and severe illness.” He was 70.
Teuber was born on June 25, 1952 in Rai-Breitenbach, Germany. While working as a dental technician, he was creating board games as an outlet. His game Barbarossa (1988) won the Game of the Year award for its market, marking Teuber’s first major success. The creator retired from dental practices in 1998, shifting his focus to game design in a full-time capacity following several more massive successes.

Settlers in Catan was released in 1995. The capacity it reached was likely unimaginable at the time; over 32 million copies of the game have been sold and many tournaments have spawned both in person and online. Players attempt to create settlements around each other, trading and bartering amongst themselves in a way that requires strategy and communication. The gameplay is different to some degree every time you play! Catan is in the movie adaptation club as well.
Teuber has won the Spiel des Jahres, an award recognizing the board and card Game of the Year in the German market, four times for Catan, Drunter und Drüber, Adel Verpflichtet, and Barbarossa.
Included in the website’s announcement was the following message: “At this time, the Teuber family respectfully requests the chance to bid farewell to their loved one in private and to be allowed the space they need to grieve.” We extend our deepest condolences to his friends and family, and ask that their wishes are respected to their fullest. Teuber’s impact on the board game world will continue to create waves for years to come as Catan is passed down.
