Reports Say EA Is Developing A Single-Player Black Panther Game

Black Panther in a video game

Fresh off the excitement of the trailer of Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever, fans learned that they may be spending more time in Wakanda than initially anticipated. A recent report from EA’s new Seattle studio cited that a new single-player, open-world Black Panther game may indeed be in early pre-production.

Very little is known about the new project, dubbed “Project Rainer,” other than it will put the player into the Vibranium boots of a newly anointed Black Panther following the death of the previous incarnation. Challenges and learnings are to be expected, combined with copious amounts of acrobatic Capoeira and Dambe.

While obvious parallels could be drawn with the sad loss of Chadwick Boseman and T’challa in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there is no definitive evidence which character – or versions of the character – will feature in the game. The mantle of Black Panther has been passed from generation to generation, from the prehistoric age (kicking it with Odin, Agamotto, and a Mammoth-riding Ghost Rider) to more recent iterations like Erik Killmonger and Shuri.

EA has traditionally eschewed single-player games. However, Jeff Grubb on Giant Bomb’s Game Mess Mornings show stated that the massive success of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order has affected the company’s strategy. They are now open to diversifying into more single-player, story-oriented games.
