John Williams Officially Has A Building Named After Him On The Sony Pictures Lot
Sony Pictures has honored John Williams by naming their music building after the legendary composer. It is well deserved, John Williams currently has five Academy Awards, a staggering twenty-five Grammys, and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. Famous for his big band iconic film scores such as Jaws, Schindler’s List, and the Star Wars Trilogy, Williams has been working in film and television since the 1950s.
The building sits on the historic Culver City lot formerly owned by MGM, who first started making pictures on the site in 1915. The John Williams building joins illustrious company; the Cary Grant Theatre and the Barbra Streisand Scoring Stage are just around the corner. The naming ceremony marks the 100th anniversary of Columbia Pictures, who have been a part of Sony since 1989.

Steven Spielberg and JJ Abrams attended the dedication, praising Williams for his creativity and commitment to the industry. Spielberg had this to say:
“I have grown up with Johnny from the very beginning. What he’s done for me is something I haven’t been able to imagine. This building is where all my stress dissipates when I finally get to this stage of production, and I know I’m in your hands. […] In the end, I don’t recognize the movies as mine but as ours. Thank you, Johnny. My movies would not be the same without you.”
Thomas Rothman, the Chairperson of Sony Pictures Entertainment asked Williams for suggestions for improving the building for future generations, and his reply was:
“Actually, Tom, we could use a couple more bathrooms for the orchestra.”
John Williams announced that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny would be his last picture, and then hastily took the comment back as soon as the film was finished. This talented composer belongs in the studio.
