First Benjamin Gates stole the Declaration of Independence in National Treasure. Then he kidnapped the president of the United States in National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets. After that, we never got to find out what crazy thing Benjamin Gates would do next. National Treasure 3 was always a faraway dream, until now.

While speaking about Top Gun: Maverick, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has revealed that the script for National Treasure 3 is written and they're just waiting for Nicholas Cage to approve it. He thinks Cage will like it, and that the script is “really good”.

Nicholas Cage wasn't even sure if National Treasure 3 would happen. He was asked about it earlier in April during an AMA on Reddit and responded with " No, the priority was to turn it into a TV show so I would say probably not". It seems a lot has changed in four months because a third movie could happen. In an interview with GQ, he reflected on the status of a third movie. A lot of his movies were released around the time National Treasure 2 came out, and they didn’t do so hot. "The phone stopped ringing. It was like,'What do you mean we're not doing National Treasure 3? It's been 14 years, why not. Well, Sorcerer's Apprentice didn't work, and Ghost Rider didn't really sell tickets. And Drive Angry just came and went."

With the National Treasure TV show on Disney+ not too far away, the creators would love to have Cage on their show. They remain hopeful that he will show up eventually. Production started earlier this year, and Justin Bartha (Riley Poole) and Harvey Keitel (Petet Sadusky) are both reprising their roles in the show.

The saga of Benjamin Gates may not be over yet. If all goes well with the script, National Treasure 3 could be out in the distant future. We just have to wait and see what Nicholas Cage says.
