As fans eagerly await James Mangold’s upcoming Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, the director is on a press tour with only a few weeks before the film debuts on Christmas Day. Timothée Chalamet will portray a young, up-and-coming Bob Dylan in early 1960s Greenwich Village, New York, with a script written by Jay Cocks based upon Elijah Wald’s book entitled Dylan Goes Electric!: Newport, Seeger, Dylan and the Night That Split the Sixties.

Recently, Mangold sat down with Deadline to discuss the film and dropped a nugget on his upcoming Star Wars project. One of the most prominent questions about the film is what the man himself, Bob Dylan, thinks of the portrayal. Mangold said, “It was super simple. He goes, ‘Do you think he can do it?’ And I said, ‘Yeah.’ That was kind of the extent of it. Bob was super direct. He wasn’t like he doubted him. It was just like, ‘What do you think, coach?’ Is it going to work out?”

From their conversation, Dylan appears excited to watch Chalamet’s performance. The iconic songwriter took to X to share this excitement, saying of the actor, “...he’s going to be completely believable as me. Or a younger me. Or some other me.”

As for Mangold’s upcoming Star Wars project, Dawn of the Jedi, he is writing with Beau Willimon and is still in the drafting stage. “My partner and I have been writing it. I don’t know what’s next because we haven’t gotten to the end of that process…we’re trying to finish a draft.”

A Complete Unknown opens on December 25, 2024, nationwide.
