Hot on the heels of the confirmation that Season 2 of Ahsoka will begin production in 2025, reporting from IndieWire has indicated that the entirety of this production will take place in the UK.

The use of UK facilities is no surprise for a Star Wars production, as the franchise’s interactions with the UK film industry date back to the Original Trilogy. More recent Lucasfilm productions, like Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and The Acolyte, also saw substantial shooting in the UK.

But the scope of this move is a surprise, especially given California recently gave a generous 21 million dollar tax credit to the production of The Mandalorian & Grogu, which was shot entirely within California. It may be that they did not provide a similar generous offer for Season 2 of Ahsoka, but other factors may be at play.

Los Angeles, once the epicenter of Hollywood filmmaking, has practically emptied out of productions in the year since the 2023 industry strikes, with statistics from FilmLA noting that while 1 in 4 film industry workers live in Los Angeles, fewer than 1 in 5 scripted productions were shot there this past summer. This withdrawal from California may also be due to ongoing competition from other US states, incentivizing film or television productions to move with generous tax credits.

We will have to wait and see if future Star Wars projects continue to bounce between the US and UK, or if Ahsoka’s second season indicates a more dramatic shift to productions being entirely shot in one nation at a time.
