'Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny' Needs A Big Showing At The Box Office To Break Even
In the age of franchises booming, you would think that a large, well-known property like Indiana Jones would be an absolute slam dunk at the box office. Even Kingdom of The Crystal Skull, a film that was largely disliked by fans and that appeared before the franchise boom officially started, made $790 million.
Given that properties like Star Wars and Marvel have since been hugely successful at the box office under the Disney name, the similarly legendary Indiana Jones series starring Harrison Ford in the titular role should be rolling in cash. While The Dial of Destiny is expected to be one of the largest money-makers this summer, that may not be enough for the film to break even.

The film’s budget is $300 million, with an estimated $100 million spent on marketing on top of that, meaning that Lucasfilm has to make $400 million just to break even. With theatres often taking half the money from movies, the movie would need to make $800 million. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull made a total of $790 million, with an opening weekend of $100 million. Given that most estimates for the opening weekend for The Dial of Destiny are currently below $70 million, it will have a lot of catching up to do just to reach Crystal Skull, and even doing that wouldn’t quite be enough to break even.
Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny is directed by James Mangold and will come to theatres on June 30. It has, so far, received mixed reviews from critics.
