In A Clear Case Of Irony, Fantasmic Dragon At Disneyland Lights On Fire During Night Show
In a story that was likely bound to happen eventually, the dragon from the show Fantasmic! at Disneyland, featuring pyrotechnics, caught on fire. The show, which is about Mickey Mouse dreaming about being an apprentice to a sorcerer, and according to Disney’s website, features “stunning effects, thrilling stunts, dazzling pyrotechnics, and rousing music,” had an incident where the dragon displayed during the show caught fire, an incident that you would be forgiven for thinking was part of the show. This was an incident many spectators, including accountant Tim Turensek thought was part of the show, until a voice announcer said “Your attention, please. Due to unforeseen circumstances, this performance of Fantasmic! will not continue. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”
“My sister and I were talking about how it was impressive,” Turensek said. “I was like, ‘Man, they can set that head on fire and it just stays perfectly intact?’ So we were kind of amazed at Disney at first and then realized it was not part of the show.”

The fire started at the dragon’s head and spread to its neck and then the body. Six employees were treated for smoke inhalation, however, luckily, neither they nor anyone else was seriously hurt. The area around the fire was closed, and everyone was evacuated. An official statement from Disneyland included an acknowledgment of the incident and some new safety measures.“We are temporarily suspending fire effects similar to those used at Disneyland park’s ‘Fantasmic!’ at select shows and entertainment experiences globally out of an abundance of caution following the ‘Fantasmic!’ prop fire.”
