At the opening night of CinemaCon 2023, Sony Pictures Animation shared 14 minutes of unfinished footage of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. “In 2018 we delivered the most creatively ambitious movie I’ve ever been a part of,” Kristine Belson, president of Sony Pictures Animation, said at the event. “We are deeply proud of the sequel.”

The footage began in the bedroom of Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore), where Miles gets an unexpected visit from Gwen Stacy (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld). The two are soon swinging around Brooklyn as Spider-Man and Spider-Woman, but their time together gets interrupted by Miles’ parents. The footage also featured a later scene where Miles and his mother have a touching talk.

Moore gave a bit of an idea of where this movie stands from the first, saying “It’s been over a year since the events of the first movie and he’s still trying to learn to be a superhero.” Miles’ journey in this film is likely to see him become confident in himself and his skills, as Moore added that the film will show that “how you wear the mask is what makes you a hero.”

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse released in 2018 to critical acclaim, winning an Oscar at the Academy Awards 2019. A third film, Beyond the Spider-Verse, will continue the events of this series of films in 2024. This second part is set for release on June 2, 2023.
