Hollywood Crew Union Gears Up For Possible Strike When Contracts Expire
The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) is approaching its own round of contract negotiations. This union will be negotiating two labor contracts with the Alliance Of Motion Picture And Television Producers (AMPTP), the Area Standards Agreement and the Basic Agreement. Negotiations for the Basic Agreement begin on March 4, 2024, while the Area Standards Agreement negotiations are expected to begin around late April. Should things not go the way they are planning, the union appears to be prepared to initiate a strike.
On IATSE’s ASA website, they firmly state, “The Negotiating Committee is not interested in extending this agreement beyond the July 31 expiration.Depending on the status of negotiations around this time, there will either be a strike authorization vote, or a ratification vote.” It may seem like there is a lot of time for negotiations to proceed, but it will likely fly as the proceedings move. The AMPTP’s willingness to give ground in this process will help to determine how drawn-out they become.

Both Agreement websites state IATSE’s commitment to these negotiations, “Our Union is going into these negotiations UNITED and from a position of STRENGTH.We will be AGGRESSIVE at the table and do what it takes to win a contract that IATSE members expect, deserve, and ratify.” Collectively, these agreements cover over 60,000 members. There is a hefty bit of responsibility on the shoulders of the Negotiation Committee, and they are taking an aggressive approach with the AMPTP thus far.
