Hit Cyberpunk Game 'Stray' To Be Turned Into An Animated Movie By Annapurna Animation
Hot off the heels of their first animated film, Nimona, Annapurna Animation has begun feature development on an animated adaptation of the video game Stray. Releasing in 2022, Stray is a third-person adventure game following a stray cat navigating an underground cyberpunk city with the help of a drone named B-12. The game was developed by the French indie studio BlueTwelve Studio and was published by Annapurna Interactive to critical acclaim.
For Annapurna’s feature adaptation of the game, Nimona co-director Nick Bruno and Ice Age director Chris Wedge are attached to the film. Also attached are Annapurna Animation’s leads Robert Baird and Andrew Millstein, who sat down for an interview with Entertainment Weekly where the Stray film was announced.
It is also worth noting that Baird and Millstein were also executives at Blue Sky Animation, the studio that produced films like Ice Age, The Peanuts Movie, and Spies in Disguise before the studio was permanently closed by Disney in 2021 following their acquisition of Blue Sky’s parent company, 20th Century Studios (formerly known as 20th Century Fox) in 2020. Blue Sky’s closure in 2021 also halted production on Nimona until it was picked up by Annapurna Pictures, with Blue Sky’s top brass also returning to finish the critically acclaimed film which was released earlier this year on Netflix.
With its planned adaptation of Stray, Annapurna Animation has a bright future in features.
