A surprise announcement at the Xbox and Bethesda Developer Direct showcase earlier this month, Hi-Fi Rush was a stealth release from Tango Gameworks. Unlike earlier releases from Tango, which were horror games of some variety or another, this game is a different beast altogether. A bright, rhythm combat game that is more like Devil May Cry than Resident Evil, Hi-Fi Rush appears to have taken the world by storm in the past week, with a 9.2/10 user score on Metacritic. What about this game has left an impact on the people that decided to give it a try?

It could be the bright and colorful art style, reminiscent of western cartoons, complete with a lower frame rate to represent hand drawn animation. It could be the rhythm-based combat, inspired by the likes of Devil May Cry and similar games. It could also be the music, which accompanies the combat and helps the players pull off their combos. We believe it to be a combination of all three, coming together in perfect harmony, all to create a unique experience, one which hasn’t been mainstream since at least the 2000s.

One thing is clear, however: Hi-Fi Rush is a surprise hit, and has garnered positive appraisals online. It has been dominating the discussions for the past week, and will likely continue to do so for a while. The year is just getting started, so stay tuned for more gaming news updates!
