Shadow and Bone fans who have longed for more of the Grishaverse were rewarded in September when Netflix gave them a brief first look at the upcoming season. New York Comic-Con 2022 gave many of those same fans a chance to come face to face with their favorite author and characters, ask questions and find out what’s in store for season two.

Shadow and Bone was the first book in a three-part series by Leigh Bardugo. It opened the world of the Grisha (soldiers of the second army who were once considered witches) and Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) the story's protagonist. Alina’s world is turned upside down when it's discovered she is the fabled Grisha called a “Sun Summoner”. The show combines the trilogy's first act with characters from Leigh’s Six of Crows duology to create a near-perfect blend that acts as a prequel to Six of Crows and improves and adds to the original trilogy. Leigh talked about this and how “adaptation is a game of trust” talking of course about her relationship with the show's forerunner Eric Heisserer.

The second season will have eight episodes and most likely follow Siege and Storm as well as balance in more of the crows (prequel) narrative. Filling in some of the new roles are Anna Leong Brophy, Lewis Tan, and Jack Wolfe. The cast briefly talked about the new additions but was careful not to let any spoilers slip. Leigh reinforced that the themes of young love, politics, and struggling to fit in would still be central to the plot. When asked if her Six of Crows series would get a standalone series she simply shrugged her shoulders and said “In Netflix we trust”.
