Hasbro In Talks To Sell ‘D&D' IP To Tencent

Despite news that things are going well economically, there is a growing trend, especially among entertainment industries, that does not match. Numerous gaming developers have laid people off over the past few months, with Microsoft being one of the highest-profile groups lately.

Now it seems that trend is spreading to other companies. The latest comes from Hasbro, who happens to own the IP for Dungeons & Dragons. Due to a consecutive series of quarters of loss, Hasbro is seeking to sell the D&D IP. This is no surprise, given the news that has come recently about the widely popular tabletop game.

Larian Studios, who last year put out the smash hit Baldur’s Gate 3, will be an intermediary for the sale, and though it would make sense for them to acquire it, they lack the capital to do so. They therefore sent it to the interest of their investor and shareholder Tencent.

Tencent is a name that is growing around the gaming industry. They are a large, East Asian company that has been purchasing ownership shares in many gaming developers over the last few years. They have entered into discussions with Hasbro to acquire several rights including game rights. Chinese companies apparently have limited chances to acquire rights to popular companies outside China, so this is being framed as a rare opportunity for their growing presence in the gaming industry.
