Rumors have been spinning around the upcoming sixth entry in the long-running Grand Theft Auto series ever since its announcement from developer Rockstar in 2022. These rumors have been building quickly, perhaps because Rockstar has been unusually quiet about the game, which is potentially expected to be its largest and most expensive project to date.

The rumors hit a crescendo in September 2022 when tons of information about its gameplay, characters, and locations from a very early game build were leaked online. Ironically, instead of this massive leak cooling the temperature down somewhat in terms of the rumors, and leaks, the ongoing silence by Rockstar has only continued to fuel rumors and speculation about the game.

The most heavily speculated rumor is about the price of the game, with some leaks suggesting that the price for the game could wind up being upwards of $150, which is virtually unheard of in the gaming community, with most games averaging approximately $70 at launch, which is considered more affordable for more gamers. Gamers have generally been worried about what they see as part of an ongoing upward trend for video game pricing, possibly explaining the intense focus on this rumor in particular.

This rumor has also fueled speculation that the $150 price tag may only reflect a “deluxe” or higher tier package for the game and that the “basic” tier package would be closer to the average $70 price tag, which would be more in line in terms of affordability for most gamers. Some have speculated that the rumors about Grand Theft Auto possibly having a significantly higher price tag may be the result of the latest installment of Grand Theft Auto costing Rockstar around 2 billion dollars to produce, as well as the possibility of the new installment having a long shelf life, like Grand Theft Auto 5, which lasted for a decade.
