Angus MacInnes, the actor famous for playing Jon ‘Dutch’ Vander in Star Wars, passed away at age 77. He died surrounded by family and friends on 23rd December 2024.

The Canadian actor landed his first small movie role in the dystopian picture Rollerball. Soon after, he was cast as Gold Leader, the X-Wing pilot in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, but MacInnes returned to the franchise for Rogue One thirty-nine years later.

Angus was a sci-fi and fantasy staple, appearing in Superman II, Judge Dredd, Hellboy, and Hellraiser II. However, he also featured in several blockbusters, such as Eyes Wide Shut, The 51st State, and Captain Phillips.  In 1998, MacInnes was picked up as a regular on PBS’ cult TV series Space Island One, and a few years later, he was recruited by Netflix for the hit show Vikings.

Aside from his acting career, MacInnes settled in Edinburgh. In 1985, he opened Mamma’s, Scotland’s first pizza restaurant with a delivery service. The independent business continues to be family-run and has received several culinary awards during its tenure.

His family confirmed his passing on social media, saying that “Angus was more than an actor—he was a kind, thoughtful, and generous soul who brought warmth and humour into the lives of everyone who knew him.”
